What is a "District of Innovation"?
A District of Innovation is a concept passed by the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842, effective immediately, that gives traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas' open enrollment charter schools. To access these flexibilities, a school district must adopt an innovation plan, as set forth in Texas Education Code chapter 12A.
On April 20, 2017, the TISD Board of Trustees adopted the Local Innovation Plan. On May 28, 2020, the Board adopted an amendment to, the District of Innovation Plan. Beginning May 10, 2022, the TISD Board of Trustees started the process for renewal by approving a District of Innovation Resolution and notified the Commissioner of their intent.
A public meeting was held on May 17th to review the draft and was unanimously approved to be submitted for Board approval, once the District of Innovation Plan has been posted to the TISD website for a minimum of 30 days.
The TISD Board of Trustees will discuss and consider approving the District of Innovation Plan, as approved by the DEC, at the regularly scheduled TISD Board Meeting on June 16, 2022.
The TISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to adopted the District of Innovation Plan on June 16, 2022.
